ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES
Assisted reproductive technologies are a group of methods used to help infertile couples. ART works by removing eggs from female’s body. The egg is then mixed with sperm to make embryos. These embryos are then put back into woman’s body.
WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF ART?
The success rate of ART varies and depends upon many factors. Some things that affect the success rate of ART include;
- Age of the partner
- Reason of infertility
- Clinic where the procedure done
- Type of ART
- If the egg is frozen or fresh
- If the embryo is frozen or fresh
The average percentage of ART that led to a live birth was;
- 39 percent in the women at the age of 35
- 30 percent in the women aged 35-37
- 21 percent in the woman aged 37-40
- 11 percent in the women aged 10-42
Art can be expensive and time consuming but it can help many couples who are trying to have a child for many year
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ART
Common methods of ART include;
· IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF):
It means that the egg being fertilized outside the body. This is most common type of ART which is used. It is often used when a female suffering from fallopian tube blockage or male produce too few sperms. Doctor treated the woman with the drugs which induce the ovaries to produce more and healthy eggs. Once mature, the eggs are removed from female body. They are put in a dish in the lab along with man’s sperm of fertilization. After 3 to 5 days, a healthy embryo is implanted in woman’s uterus.
· Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
This procedure is similar to IVF. Fertilization occurs in laboratory. Then a very young embryo in transferred to fallopian tubes instead if uterus.
· GAMETE INTRAFALLOPIAN TRANSFER (GIFT)
This procedure involves transferring eggs and sperm in woman’s fallopian tubes. So, the fertilization occurs in woman’s body.
· INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTIONS (ICSI)
Is often use for the couples in which there are some serious problem with sperms. Sometimes it is used for the older couples or for those who failed with IVF attempts. In ICSI, a single sperm is injected into mature egg. The embryo is transferred into the uterus or fallopian tubes.
Art procedures are sometimes involves the use of donor egg or donor sperm, a previously frozen embryos. Donor eggs are sometime used for woman who cannot produce eggs. Also donor eggs or donor sperms are used for the couples who have some kind of genetic disorder which can be transferred to child. An infertile woman or couple also used frozen embryos. The donated embryo is transferred to uterus of woman. The child will not be the genetically related to either parent.
SURROGACY
Woman with no egg or unhealthy egg may also consider the option of surrogacy. A surrogate is a woman who agrees to become pregnant using man sperms and her own egg. A child will genetically relate to surrogate and the male partner. After birth, the surrogate will give up the baby for adoption by the parents.
GESTATIONAL CARRIER
Woman with ovaries but no uterus may b able to use a gestational carrier. This may also be an option for a woman who cannot become pregnant due to some serious health issues. In this case, a woman uses her own egg. It is fertilized with man’s sperm and then an embryo is transferred in the uterus of carrier. The carrier will not relate to the baby and will give baby to the parents after birth.
